Kanoute saves Spanish mosque

Malian Muslim footballer Frederic Kanoute, has saved the only mosque in the southern Spanish city of Seville from closure.

MADRID - Malian Muslim footballer Frederic Kanoute, the striker of Spain's Seville FC, has saved the only mosque in the southern Spanish city of Seville from closure.

Kanoute has paid 510,860 euros (some $700,000) so that fellow Muslims in Seville would not find themselves without a mosque, reported Agence France-Presse (AFP).

The privately owned mosque was due to be sold after a contract to use the premises by the local Muslim population had expired.

But Kanoute stepped in to purchase the building.

The 30-year-old striker has not made any comment on the matter.

But city authorities have confirmed that the property has been registered in Kanoute's name, according to the BBC Sport.

It is estimated that Kanoute has spent almost a year's salary to buy the mosque.

Kanoute, , one of the finalists for the 2007 BBC African Footballer of the Year award, moved in 2005 from French champions Lyon to Seville FC, the 2006-07 Spanish league's third and the holder of last season's cup championship.

Spanish Muslims said they really appreciate Kanoute's moving gesture.

"If it had not been for Kanoute then we would not have had a mosque on Fridays, which is the most holy day of the week for Muslims," a spokesman for the Islamic Community of Spain was quoted as saying by BBC Sport.

Kanoute, who has also created a foundation in his motherland Mali to help orphans, reverted to Islam 10 years ago.

Last Ramadan, he impressed Spanish football fans by his unique performance though he was fasting.

Kanoute was crowned last year the league's top scorer with 20 goals, outperforming football legends such as Brazilian Ronaldinho.

Kanoute, a practicing Muslim who regularly performs his prayers even in the locker room, refused last season to wear a jersey advertising for an inte gambling site, because gambling is forbidden in Islam.

His team had to give him a brand-free jersey until he accepted wearing the sponsored jersey in return for money to an Islamic charity.

14 pelajar dakwa didera warden

KUALA KANGSAR 27 Nov. – Seramai 14 pelajar tingkatan empat, Sekolah Menengah Agama Madrasah Sultan Idris Shah, Bukit Chandan di sini, mendakwa didera seorang warden kerana memasuki makmal komputer sekolah tanpa kebenaran.

Dalam kejadian pada 28 Oktober lalu itu, warden terbabit didakwa mengarahkan mereka berbaris di atas jalan raya tanpa berbaju sebelum menampar dan menyebat mereka dengan getah paip serta diarah berguling di permukaan jalan tar.

Lebih teruk lagi, warden berusia lingkungan 30-an itu turut didakwa menjirus air sejuk ke atas dada dan air panas di belakang pelajar terbabit yang ketika itu dipaksa meniarap.

Seorang pelajar mendakwa, Muhammad Aizul Zazwan Roslan, 16, sebelum kejadian, dia bersama rakannya pergi ke pasar raya berhampiran untuk mengambil begnya yang tertinggal.

“Disebabkan kesalahan itu, saya bersama dua rakan telah ditampar lima kali di muka sehingga lebam sebelum disuruh berbaris bersama 11 pelajar lain yang ditangkap kerana memasuki makmal komputer tanpa kebenaran,” katanya ketika ditemui di sini hari ini.

Muhammad Aizul telah membuat laporan polis pada keesokkan harinya dan dibawa ke Hospital Kuala Kangsar di mana doktor mengarah dia ditahan untuk menjalani pemeriksaan.

Sementara itu, bapa kepada Muhammad Aizul, Roslan Johari ketika ditemui berkata, beliau bercadang mengambil tindakan undang-undang terhadap warden berkenaan.

“Saya kesal dengan apa yang berlaku kerana kesalahan yang dilakukan oleh anak saya sepatutnya ditangani dengan cara profesional.

“Ini tidak, dia melibas anak saya dengan getah paip sehingga mencederakan kulitnya dan ditambah dengan air panas. Dia (warden) ini tidak bertamadun.

“Akibat perbuatan warden itu, anak saya kini sudah benar-benar berubah dan menjadi pendiam,” katanya.

Lebih dikesali, katanya, anaknya telah dimasukkan ke Hospital Kuala Kangsar selama tiga hari menyebabkan dia gagal menduduki peperiksaan akhir Bahasa Malaysia.

“Yang paling menyakitkan hati saya ialah mudir, kaunselor, guru disiplin dan wakil Persatuan Ibu Bapa dan Guru (PIBG) yang ditemui berjanji memberi pampasan selain menggugurkan dakwaan kesalahan anak saya.

“Mereka meminta kejadian itu diselindungkan dari media kerana sekolah agama tersebut merupakan sebuah sekolah yang terkenal di negara ini,” dakwanya.

Apa yang mengejutkan, katanya, dua minggu selepas insiden itu, pihak sekolah memanggilnya dan memberitahu anaknya akan digantung sekolah selama dua minggu, selain dijatuhi hukuman empat kali sebatan kerana kesalahan tersebut.

Beliau mendakwa, pihak sekolah memberikan alasan terpaksa merotan dan menggantung persekolahannya kerana laporan polis yang dibuat telah menyebabkan warden yang terlibat dalam kes tersebut digantung kerja.

Timbalan Ketua Polis Daerah Kuala Kangsar, Deputi Supritendan Guan Beng Kan ketika dihubungi mengesahkan menerima laporan tentang kejadian tersebut.

Sementara itu, Jabatan Agama Islam Perak (JAIP) menggantung tugas seorang warden Sekolah Menengah Agama Madrasah Idris Shah, Bukit Chandan di Kuala Kangsar ekoran kes 14 pelajar sekolah itu yang mendakwa didera baru-baru ini.

Pengarahnya, Datuk Jamry Suri berkata, tindakan menggantung kerja itu berkuat kuasa serta-merta sehingga kes penderaan terbabit selesai disiasat oleh polis.

AN international student broke down in tears yesterday when she saw the damage to her gutted inner-city home.

Aida Farhana, 20, from Malaysia, shares the rented Royal Ave house with three international students, who are abroad at present.

She was not in the house when the blaze began in the early hours yesterday and only learnt about it when she returned about 11.15am.

The second-year psychology student was overwhelmed by the damage.

Her neighbour raised the alarm about 4.30am.

Melody Cooper, 22, said she feared for the safety of her neighbours as the adjoining maisonette was engulfed in flames.

"I went out the front and saw the house was on fire," she said.

"I called triple O then grabbed my little girl and ran outside.

"I knew there were some girls living there but I didn't know if they were inside. I was extremely concerned for them.

"It was very scary. I thought it could spread to my home. The firemen wouldn't let us back into our house."

Fire-cause investigator Stephen Davies said Metropolitan Fire Service crews smashed into the house "because at that time of the day we assume that there is someone in the building".

He said: "It appears it was an electrical fault caused by an airconditioning unit on the roof."

Damage was estimated at $200,000.

• The Centre for Sleep Research is conducting a study into recovery from sleep loss, and we are looking to recruit 2 participants to take part.
• Participation involves staying in the Sleep Centre for 10 continuous days in November (without leaving), during which you will be required to complete an array of performance tests every 2 hours, beginning at 9:00am.
• This is a control condition, so there is no sleep deprivation involved. Instead, your sleeps will be 9 hours (from 11:00am to 8:00am) in length. (shud be 11pm-8am)
  
• During all sleep periods, your sleep will be monitored using standard polysomnography, which consists of electrodes attached to your face and scalp. You are also required to refrain from consuming any alcohol, caffeine or medication for the 24 hours prior to and during the experimental period.
• You will be compensated for any inconvenience associated with your participation in this study. If for some reason you do no complete the entire protocol, you will receive a pro rata payment.

Application Procedures

• There are a number of screening criteria that must be satisfied before you can take part in the study. These include being a healthy, non-smoker, aged 18-35 years old, taking no medication and with a regular sleep pattern.
• Before commencing the study, potential participants will be required to complete a 7-night sleep/wake diary and attend a screening interview where they will complete a general health questionnaire.

one underrated star which caught my attention in past few seasons (not to mention his elderly face!). he did not wentto any football academy or anything, but his close-control is one of the best i've seen so far. just put it here in case u all interested.

THE PLAYER:

Alexander Hleb, Arsenal and Belarus midfielder

FOOTBALLER'S LIFE:

Attacking midfielder Alexander Hleb's influence in the Barclays English Premier League is increasing rapidly. Hleb took time to find his feet after moving to Arsenal two years ago but now seems well settled and has played a big part in the club's fine start to the season.

Hleb's story is the classic rags-to-riches tale. The 26-year-old, whose Christian name has been Anglicised from the native Aleksandr, grew up in poverty in Minsk before striking it rich as a footballer in the West, first with German club Stuttgart and then Arsenal.

Hleb's parents worked hard to make ends meet during his childhood, his father a bus driver and his mother a bricklayer. When Hleb was four his father was 'volunteered' to help with the clear-up after the Chernobyl disaster. He was away for six months demolishing houses affected by radiation. Hleb is convinced his father's health was badly affected and he is still suffering the side-effects today.

Hleb remembers the fall of the Iron Curtain at the age of 10 and the formation of the separate Belarus republic.

Such was his impoverished upbringing that he did not own a pair of football boots until the age of 12. He learned his game playing on concrete pitches, avoiding the injuries that befell a number of his contemporaries and forced them to stop playing.

At 17, he signed for the tractor factory workers' team Bate Borisov and immediately caught the eye. He won the domestic title in his first season and within two years was snapped up by Stuttgart.

Under the tutelage of manager Felix Magath, Hleb developed in to a feared playmaker and earned international recognition. He was outstanding as Stuttgart finished Bundesliga runners-up in 2003 and enjoyed a run in the UEFA Champions League.

That impressive team began to break up, however, after Magath moved to Bayern Munich and Hleb had a number of disagreements with his replacement Matthias Sammer.

Arsenal kept an eye on the situation and pounced in the northern summer of 2005 with a successful GBP10million ($A22.7million) bid.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger did not expect immediate returns from his signing but the fee was difficult for observers and fans to ignore.

Arriving as the talismanic Patrick Vieira left also gave Hleb a lot more to live up to and he initially struggled to make an impact.

That began to change towards the end of the season as Arsenal reached the UEFA Champions League final. He became a regular in the 2006-07 campaign and has been outstanding during the Gunners' excellent start to the current season.

FOOTBALLER'S WIFE:

Hleb recently said that he enjoyed a good break, taking a trip home, holidaying in Turkey and the United States and spending a lot of time with his girlfriend. His mother should be pleased.

"He doesn't have a girlfriend - he's so obsessed with his career that he has no time," she said at the time of his move to Arsenal. "I hope he meets someone nice soon."

FOOTBALLER'S STRIFE:

Hleb is now reaping the rewards of his hard work, earning a salary reputedly in the region of GBP60,000 ($A136,200) per week. His childhood was markedly different.

"There was always a lack of money," said his mother, who earned around GBP20 ($A45.40) per week laying bricks. "We depended on relatives to give us food."

"He was about nine when my brother, also called Aleksandr, won a real leather football. He gave it to our son."

"God, that was a happy moment. Aleksandr, his brother and other boys would spend their days and nights playing football."

Growing up in such a close-knit family, Hleb found it hard when he first moved to Germany.

"My heart was bleeding because I knew it would be a very hard time for him," Lidia Hleb said. "Initially it was a nightmare. Several times he called to say he was planning to come home."

"But then he said, no, he was going to stay. He wanted to show he was strong, and he has done that."

FOOTBALLER'S DRIVE:

Hleb acquired something of a playboy reputation in his younger days at Stuttgart and did attract criticism back home for his lifestyle.

He was noted for his women and fast cars but a car accident in his Audi back in Minsk forced him to reassess his lifestyle.

ONE TO REMEMBER:

Hleb got Arsenal's current season up and running when he netted a last-gasp goal to secure a 2-1 win over Fulham at the Emirates Stadium on the opening day.

ONE TO FORGET:

One of the reasons for Hleb's slow start at Arsenal was a knee injury. Hleb played in a World Cup qualifier against Scotland in October 2005 but returned needing surgery and was ruled out for two months.

raya: hari ini atau esok?

assalamualaikum..

teringat aku, syaaban yang lalu. ada mesyurat di bristol, soal bila kita akan mula berpuasa. terdengar dari mulut orang melayu:

"majoriti puasa hari rabu, cuma muthanna(presiden islamic society) nak juga puasa hari selasa".

(statement ini sendiri tidak substantif, memandangkan, ada pendapat yang berkata majoriti adalah sebaliknya)

maka, islamic society dan kebanyakan student pun berpuasa hari selasa. kecuali umat melayu yang berpecah. ada yang ikut perisytiharan islamic society (kumpulan A), ada yang ikut kumpulan B.

tiba musim raya:
terkejut aku. aik, ramai pula raya ikut islamic society. bukan kat bristol ni majoriti raya hari jumaat? setelah secara tak langsung mereka meragui kredibiliti presiden islamic society, kali ini ramai pula yang ikut beraya. pelik bin ajaib.

tertanya:
dalam kes pertama tadi, kita memberi kepercayaan bulat kepada kumpulan B, kenapa bila berhari raya kita tidak beri kepercayaan kepada kumpulan B? bukankah ini satu inconsistency?

kumpulan B akan tetap kumpulan B, dan kumpulan A akan tetap kumpulan A. cuma, di tengah-tengah, ada umat melayu yang bergoyang ke sana dan ke sini.

jangan ketika berhadapan dengan Allah kelak, kita akan dituduh orang yang sengaja mengambil ringan hal ehwal agama. kategori mengelak dari melakukan tanggungjawab.

Cleve mode..

few things i learnt during my clinical placement:

1. Cleve country people:

• they r much like "org2 kampung" in malaysia, frenly, everybody knows everybody, "hi" and wave hand to everybody, including passers-by in cars.
• "dont talk to stranger" policy is not applicable for their kids. i remember a group of young ballerinas surrounded me on my way to my accomodation, n asked me my name etc. there was also a boy asking me "who r u?" when i went past his house.
• they drink and use rain water instead of pipe water. pipe water is no good and taste bad.
• most of the houses in farms powered by solar and wind energy due to the extra costs they have to pay to get electricity installed. im talking about around 30k.
• the men's hobbies are stuffing their sheds ( with things such as lorries, cars, tyres, bikes...everything!!), fishing and shooting (rabbits, kangaroos, pigs, wildcats.. but not emus, foxes, birds)
• the women's hobbies are quilting, gardening and fishing.
• other hobbies are scuba diving, bush walking and swimming.
• U feel safe in a car driven by a man holding a stubby in hand, and already had few bottles before.
• rain brings happiness to everybody (the draught is really affecting averybody, especially the farmers)
• only a cop working in the police station.
• the nearest neighbour is 30-40 kms away

2. health n diseases:

i've never see as much people with total knee replacement (TKR) in Malaysia. we had a good discussion and derived a conclusion:

u will have to have TKR if:

• u get injury to the knee due to sports, accidents etc
• u use sitting toilet instead of squatting toilet
• u TAK SOLAT 5 waktu*
• u didnt do a lot of movement, especially the inner range one.
• other reasons...
  

when i was very young, i thought that for an elderly, having to pray 5 times a day is unappropriate and doesnt make sense at all. but looking at the outcome, it is clear enough why solat is compulsory as long as u r living. do u expect average old people to do yoga and aerobic everyday? u wish!!

u dont belive me? wait until the time when u will have to spend ur gaji, KWSP or pencen money on orthopedics, physios and surgeons. even if u r covered by insurance etc, i bet u wouldnt want to experience the pain and sufferings.

above all, thanks to all who make my stay in Cleve confortable, fun and educational (kes kes). i wish i dont have to come back to this boring city life of Adelaide the babelaide (anybody heard this b4?).

maka dengan ini, pada pukul 2.50pm 27/9/07, dengan rasminya tamatlah sesi clinical placement saya di Cleve yg permai ini. jajahan cleve-kimba-cowell berjaya dijajahi dengan cemerlang, gemilang dan terbilang. terimakasih diucapkan kpd ms Sophie Cohen selaku supervisor yg baik hati.

maka, tidak bolehlah lagi utk menetap di community house utk satu tempoh yg lebih lama.. esok akan balik dengan bas pkl 10.20am, from cleve to adelaide. harap2 cuace bagus n buleh amik gamba.

tp seblom balik.. perlu berhuhahuha kat pub bersama Staff2 yg lain dahulu pkl 5-9 pm kang...

Lincoln escapees captured

TWO prison escapees have been recaptured this morning after losing control of a stolen car while evading police.

In what sounds like an episode of the TV drama Prison Break, the two men, 18 and 19, escaped from Port Lincoln Prison just after 7pm last night.

Guards quickly alerted police and authorities searched the local area for the pair.

About 5.50am they were disturbed as they were stealing a Toyota Hilux at Tumby Bay.

Patrols followed the car for 50km as it drove to Port Lincoln. The driver lost control and the car rolled at the corner of Oxley Tce and Sleaford St.

Neither man was injured. They were taken to Port Lincoln Police Station where they were questioned before being charged with escaping lawful custody and illegal use of a motor vehicle.

Both men are medium-security prisoners serving time for dishonesty offences.

Please be advised there have been several incidents of bird swooping across the campus in recent days..

Watch out for swooping birds
Swooping birds may be a frightening or even a dangerous experience. Native birds swoop in urban and rural areas, in parks and gardens, along bike tracks and in school yards, or anywhere the birds are nesting. By understanding why native birds swoop and how to avoid them, breeding season may be less stressful for people.

Why they swoop
Like most animals, magpies and other swooping birds instinctively protect their territory, particularly during breeding time. They are protecting their nests, eggs or young from potential intruders. Most birds will swoop within 30-50 meters of their nest. If they perceive you to be a potential threat, they may swoop. The likelihood of an attack is increased if they are teased or feel threatened in any way.

Swooping is the most common defence behavior. The birds' aim is to threaten or bluff and the intention is only to ward off intruders.
Beak clacking is part of their defence strategy.
In a strike attack, a magpie usually swoops, hovers momentarily and then strikes. The fluttering of wings as the bird hovers can be a warning to duck your head to avoid the attack.


Risks
Swooping birds can cause injuries. They usually attack with their beaks and aim for the scalp, face or eyes. If bike riders are swooped they could lose their balance, fall off, or ride into the path of cars. A bird swooping can be a frightening experience for children. Swooping birds can also spook horses.

Protection and avoidance
All native birds are protected under the Wildlife Act and there are serious penalties for taking, harassing or injuring native wildlife. It is illegal to kill birds, destroy their nests or eggs without a permit or authority.

There are ways to minimise attacks.

Ways to avoid swooping that may work

Avoid the swoop area – try walking or riding in a different direction.
Cyclists should always wear a helmet. It is better to dismount and walk your bike past a swoop area.
Travel in a group. Most birds only swoop individuals.
Be confident and face a swooping bird; usually they only attack people facing away from them.
Do not panic and run. It will only encourage a swooping bird to continue its attack.
Wear a hat in an area where there are swooping birds.
Magpies appear to be dissuaded from swooping when they are being watched, so try wearing a hat with 'eyes' painted on the back of it. Sunglasses worn backwards have a similar effect.
Holding a stick or umbrella over your head will often cause the bird to keep its distance.

Ways that do not tend to work

Do not harass, interfere or throw stones at birds as this only makes them more aggressive and defensive.
Do not destroy nests as the birds may re-nest and the breeding season extended.
Do not feed or befriend swooping birds.

Remember
Most birds swoop only during the nesting and rearing period. They are only trying to protect their territory, nests, eggs and young. Most swooping behavior is a form of bluffing. Birds rarely make contact when swooping

SKBG episode I

berikutan byk berita spt ini, saya ingin merakamkan jutaan tahniah kepada SKBG kerana masuk suratkabar. femes lak kompeni nih skang.

i may hav lost my left leg due to the accident 8 yrs ago, luckily the crushing force is just enuff to split my shin a bit and break my bones (tibia n fibula) . absence from football and loosing the armband to a colleague was a low period i would say, but nothing more than that.

yesterday, in the middle of the TEN news, there was a breaking news come in, a head-on collision which caused immediate death to the driver. if TV3 or TV1 r about to do the same thing, they wouldnt hav enuff time to talk about other things.
